Exploring Biometric (FingerPrint) Devices
In recent years, the adoption of biometric authentication technologies has surged, promising enhanced security and convenience across various sectors. However, with technological advancements come critical considerations regarding privacy, security, and regulatory compliance. One such pertinent development is the phasing out of Level 0 (L0) devices for biometric authentication, mandated by UIDAI regulations in India.
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has been at the forefront of integrating biometric authentication into various governmental and private services through Aadhaar. L0 devices, which capture biometric data (such as fingerprints and iris scans) have been widely used in early implementations.
According to a circular from UIDAI dated January 27, 2023, the sunset date for L0 devices, originally set for June 30, 2024, has been extended by one month. They will now be phased out by July 31, 2024.
The below circular from UIDAI, dated 10-04-2024, contains the list of L1 biometric devices.
